Books about Black history fill the library at Hickman Mills South Middle School. Soon, the school will have a new name thanks to a man who continues to write Black history in Kansas City.
The Hickman Mills school board voted to name the building Alvin Brooks Middle School at its December member.
Hickman Mills South Middle School proudly welcomed 13 outstanding students into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) during a special induction ceremony on February 4, 2025. With a gym packed full of family, staff, and current NJHS members, the event celebrated these exceptional students' hard work, dedication, and character.
The Hickman Mills C-1 School District (HMC-1) proudly honors two exceptional leaders who have shaped the South Kansas City community. The district’s Board of Education has voted to name two school buildings in recognition of Alvin Brooks and John Sharp, whose decades of service, advocacy, and leadership have left a lasting impact on students and families.
Hickman Mills South Middle School students had a special opportunity to learn about success, perseverance, and planning for the future from a dynamic father-son duo with deep Kansas City ties — former Chiefs linebacker Gerald Blanton and his son, Kendall Blanton, a two-time Super Bowl champion tight end.

December Spirit Week
Our December Spirit Week was a joyful celebration of creativity and school pride! Throughout the week, students and staff embraced the holiday cheer with themed dress-up days, bringing smiles and a sense of togetherness to our school community.
From Grinch-inspired outfits to cozy hats and socks, festive pajamas, and ugly sweaters, each day showcased incredible creativity and enthusiasm. The "Dress Like a Present" theme was especially memorable, with some truly inventive and fun costumes lighting up the halls.๐โจ
